Perth County discovered live poultry with avian influenza H5N1

The highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 strain, also known as HPAI, was discovered in live chicken that was transported by an outside source to a commercial processing facility in Perth County.

Once the virus was found, the plant operator acted right away in response to the crisis.

The public has been informed that all suspected sick poultry is on hold.

H5N1 is not as easily transmitted from birds to humans and is brought on by a different virus strain than the common flu.

Fully cooked fowl is safe, according to Huron Perth Public Health, as there is no proof that consuming cooked poultry or eggs can transmit HPAI to people.

Public risk is viewed as being low.
